Why Fall Is the Perfect Time to Learn West Coast Swing in Pensacola
Fall feels a little different in Pensacola.
The summer rush starts settling down. Schedules become a little more normal. Students are back. People start making plans again.
And even though we don't exactly pull out the heavy winter coats around here, there is still something about fall that feels like a reset.
Maybe that's why it's such a good time to try something new.
Not something you do once.
Something you can actually become part of.
Pensacola Has Plenty to Do. But What Can You Join?
There is never really a shortage of things to do in Pensacola.
We have festivals, concerts, beaches, restaurants, sporting events, nightlife, downtown events and plenty of places to spend an evening.
Those are all great.
But sometimes you're looking for something different.
Something where you aren't just watching.
Something where you actually participate.
Something that gives you a reason to leave the house every week, learn a new skill, recognize more faces and slowly become part of a community.
That's where social dancing is a little different.
You Don't Have to Already Be a Dancer
This is probably the biggest misconception we hear.
People see experienced dancers on the floor and think:
“I could never do that.”
Here's the part they don't see.
Those dancers weren't born knowing how to West Coast Swing.
At some point, every single one of them had a first night.
They didn't know the steps.
They didn't understand the music.
They probably felt a little awkward.
And many of them walked through the door without knowing anybody.
Then they learned one thing.
And then another.
They came back.
Eventually, the thing that once looked impossible became something they simply did on Monday nights.
That's how dancing starts.
If you're completely new, our Beginner Dance Lessons in Pensacola page explains exactly what to expect when you walk through the door for the first time.
Fall Is a Great Time to Build a New Routine
Starting something new is easier when it becomes part of your schedule.
That's one of the reasons we love Monday nights.
Instead of waiting until the weekend to decide what you're going to do, you already know:
Monday is dance night.
Every Monday, Pensacola Swing Dance Society brings people together at Ragon Hall for West Coast Swing lessons followed by social dancing.
You learn.
You practice.
You dance with different people.
You hear great music.
And then you come back the next week and build on it.
A few Monday nights can turn into a hobby.
A few months can turn into real confidence on the dance floor.
And somewhere along the way, the people you kept seeing every Monday may become the people you look forward to seeing every week.
You Don't Need a Partner
Really.
You don't.
West Coast Swing is a social partner dance, which means dancing with different people is part of the experience.
During classes, we rotate partners.
During the social dance, people ask each other to dance.
Some people arrive with friends or a spouse.
Plenty come by themselves.
So if you've been waiting for someone to agree to take dance lessons with you, you can stop waiting.
Come anyway.
It's Also a Pretty Great Way to Meet People in Pensacola
Meeting people as an adult can be surprisingly difficult.
Work.
Home.
Errands.
Repeat.
You can be surrounded by people all day without actually meeting anyone new.
Social dancing changes that because interaction is built into what you're doing.
You're learning with people.
Rotating partners.
Laughing when something doesn't work.
Trying it again.
Dancing to a song together.
Talking between dances.
Then you show up the next week and recognize somebody.
Then somebody recognizes you.
Community often starts that simply.
If that's part of what you're looking for, we've also written about finding community when you're new to Pensacola.
Start Now and Imagine Where You'll Be by the Holidays
Here's another reason fall is such a good time to begin:
You have time.
Start now and you aren't going to be an expert by Christmas.
You don't need to be.
But you might be surprised how different the dance floor feels after a couple of months of consistently showing up.
Songs start making more sense.
Movements become more comfortable.
You stop thinking about every individual step.
You recognize more people.
You start asking people to dance instead of waiting to be asked.
And maybe the next time you're somewhere with music playing, instead of thinking “I wish I knew how to dance,” you realize:
You do.
What Is West Coast Swing Anyway?
West Coast Swing is a modern social partner dance that can be danced to an enormous variety of music.
Depending on the night, you might hear pop, R&B, blues, country, contemporary music and songs you probably already have somewhere on your playlist.
It isn't about memorizing one choreographed routine.
Two people connect.
They listen to the music.
They communicate through the partnership.
And they create the dance together.
That's why the same song can feel completely different with two different partners.
It's also why people can dance West Coast Swing for years and still have something new to learn.
