How to Make Friends in Pensacola as an Adult

Moving to a new city, working from home, changing jobs, or simply realizing your social circle has gotten smaller can make meeting new people surprisingly difficult.

The good news? Pensacola has plenty of opportunities to connect. The trick is finding something that gets you out of the house and around the same people regularly.

Find Something You Can Do Every Week

One-time events can be fun, but friendships usually happen through repeated interaction.

Classes, recreational groups, volunteer organizations, fitness activities, and other weekly gatherings give you a reason to keep seeing the same people without the pressure of walking up to a stranger and trying to start a friendship from scratch.

That's one of the reasons social dancing works so well.

At Pensacola Swing Dance Society, our Monday night West Coast Swing program combines classes with social dancing. People learn together, rotate partners during class, and naturally meet a lot of people throughout the evening.

You don't need to bring a partner, and many people walk through the door by themselves their first night.

Try Something Where Interaction Is Built In

It's easier to meet people when the activity itself gives you a reason to talk to them.

West Coast Swing is a partner dance, so meeting people is literally part of the experience. You aren't standing on the edge of a room trying to figure out who to talk to.

You learn together. You dance together. You laugh when something doesn't work. Then you try it again.

If you've never danced before, start with our Beginner Dance Lessons in Pensacola page to see how getting started works.

Don't Worry About Coming Alone

This is probably one of the biggest things that stops adults from trying something new.

“I don't have anyone to go with.”

Go anyway.

A good community should make it possible to arrive alone without staying alone.

Pensacola Swing Dance Society has been building that kind of community in Pensacola for years. Some people come because they want to learn to dance. Others want something different to do on a Monday night. Some are new to town. Some simply want to meet more people.

You can learn more about the community on our About PSDS page.

Stay Connected Between Events

Friendships aren't limited to the nights we're dancing.

Follow Pensacola Swing Dance Society on Facebook for upcoming events, photos, videos, and community updates, and follow us on Instagram for more dancing, behind-the-scenes content, and what's happening around PSDS.

Seeing familiar faces online also makes walking into your first event a lot easier.

Sometimes You Just Have to Show Up

You don't need a huge plan for making friends in Pensacola.

Find something that sounds interesting.

Show up.

Then show up again.

Friendships usually aren't created in one big moment. They're built from dozens of small ones.

And sometimes it all starts with asking someone:

“Would you like to dance?”
